Q: What is the WiFi tracker?
A: The WiFi Tracker is a GPS tracker designed to constantly track the location of your vehicle.
Q: Why do I need a tracker in my vehicle?
A: There are two main reasons:
Q: Does it require a monthly plan?
A: No. Unlike conventional GPS trackers that require a wireless data plan the WiFi Tracker does not have any monthly fees. This is because it uses open Wi-Fi hotspots to connect to the Internet and upload its data to a central server. The only expense is the initial purchase price and the installation.
Q: Why is a Wi-Fi tracker better than a conventional GSM tracker?
A: There are few reasons:
Q: How exactly does it work?
A: The WiFi Tracker contains a GSP module that tracks the location, speed and direction of your vehicle every 10 seconds. This data is saved to the onboard FLASH memory. It also contains a Wi-Fi module that constantly looks for open hotspots. As soon it finds one it uploads the data to a central server. You can see this data on a map by logging in to www.wifi-tracker.net/my.
Q: Can I see what the typical data looks like before I decide to buy one?
A: Yes, we have provided the data from several test trackers to a special test account. This is real data, not a simulation and it can be accessed by logging in to https://www.wifi-tracker.net/my, username: demo, password: demo.
Q: What if it does not find any open Wi-Fi hotspots.
A: The tracker has the memory capacity to store years worth of data. Sooner or later it will find one.
Q: How often will it find an open Wi-Fi hotspot?
A: When driving in a populated area in North America on average once every hour. In Europe about 3 times per hour. These are averages obtained from tests in various American, Canadian and European cities.
Q: Who owns and maintains all these open Wi-Fi hotspots?
A: These usually belong to restaurants, coffee shops, gas stations, public transportation busses, taxies, etc. These days they are everywhere.
Q: Can it be configured to connect to my secured home Wi-Fi router?
A: Yes, you can configure it through the website. For more information see the Configuration section.
Q: Who can install it in my vehicle?
A: Basically anyone qualified to install a car stereo will be more than qualified to install it. Please see the Installation section for more info.
Q: Where should the tracker be installed?
A: The two best places are either under the front dash or the rear dash of your vehicle. But you can install it anywhere where it is not obstructed by metal parts from above. Please see the Installation section for more info.
Q: Can the tracker be installed on a motorcycle or an electric bicycle?
A: Yes, its very small size and flexible voltage requirements make it the perfect device for that. The tracker can be powered with a voltage ranging from 5 to 40 volts.
Q: Will having a tracker installed reduce my car insurance?
A: Yes, many insurance companies provide reduced rates for anti-theft devices. GPS trackers usually rate as most effective. Please check with your insurance company for the specifics.
